Obama : support & assist – don’t bring him down
Let’s be clear about one thing – Obama is not perfect. Anyone thinking the reverse is deluded. He’s just a man, not an angel (although it’d be really cool if he IS indeed a black angel) 
So he made mistakes, and he will continue to do so from time to time.
That said – I’m absolutely appalled at lack of patience that’s displayed by some people. Do you SERIOUSLY think that 8 YEARS of destructions done by Bush can be reversed by Obama in 1 MONTH ??
Come on people. We’re talking about some of the MOST thorough global destruction ever witnessed in this century. Bush does not only destroy America, he also wreaked havoc in various other countries too. Including Indonesia – various evil US corporations really did have a field day during his administration.
I already expected that Bush’s great momentum of disaster would be really hard to stop and turn around. I’ve suspected that Obama would have to compromise in several cases – and it has started to happen. There is NO way he’d be able to do everything – he’ll have to prioritize. Anyone with the slightest experience of management roles will understand this. To compromise really sucks, but sometimes the other options are even worse. Like quitting what you’re doing. Ask yourself – do you really feel like seeing him leaving after just a while ?
What really matters is his intentions – does Obama do that because he’s evil? Or is it because he’s cornered to? Or unable to do the reverse? And so on.
Remember, we’re talking about politics here. This is among the MOST complicated subject anyone could ever encounter. And here Obama is tackling US of A’s politics – probably the most complex of them all.
Unfortunately, we can’t read into people’s mind yet. Fortunately, we CAN make intelligent assessments. Instead of just accusing people blindly, we should really do this.
Check Obama’s track records. List his negative and positive points, this will enable you to see things more objectively. Try to focus on the bigger picture.
This is why I like Truth-O-Meter by Politifact.com. It really help you to look at things objectively, not subjectively. Note that it still misses some, even big ones – such as the fact that Obama have put a good man in charge for the recovery of USA, etc.
However, it’s definitely better than nothing.
Even easier is to compare Obama with Bush.
It then become as clear as day and night !
People, help Obama to make USA better for you. Don’t drag him down over small details. When he made mistakes – let him know that you’re not happy. When he try to do something right, let him know too that you support him.
It can be very lonely up there. If all you’re doing is nag him and get angry, any human is bound to get tired of it and think, “why the hell am I doing this ?“. That’s the first step to seduction by the sweet melody from the dark side.
A small compliment from time to time never hurts. A polite, but firm, reminder is always much better than a rude one.

So unless you want another Bush to rise and kick your collective a$$es even harder than before – get up, and work together to rebuild America.
We will all benefit from that as well. Because we all live in this same small blue rock called “Earth”, on this vast void of universe.

As one could expect (at least as I did expect): yours is a very wise call for benevolent realism in the assessment of the Obama administration. I second the content of your post – well, up to 99,9%
Of course Obama has been chosen by the American people to further the interests of the US. So by definition he sometimes will disappoint or even anger us, non US citizens.
And he even will anger and disappoint a lot of Americans – the Midwest bigots because he, in contrast to his predecessor, is not a bigot himself. And the hardcore conservatives because he is not dogmatically against government and does not absolutely believe in casino capitalism without regulation.
And quite a number of the blacks and poor whites also, because he will not be able to turn the tide of unemployment overnight. Especially they should be reminded to keep real.
So, let’s indeed take the context and circumstances of his concrete policies in consideration all the time and just “check Obama’s track records” within that framework. And give him a lot of credit.
With about 0,1% of your post I don’t agree. It is this line: “What really matters is his intentions – does Obama do that because he’s evil?”.
Whether a politician’s intentions are good or evil are more or less irrelevant. Nixon’s and Kissinger’s intentions probably were evil, but his relatively friendly foreign policies toward the People’s Republic of China were a blessing to the world. I go with my teacher French in high school; he used to tell us, his pupils, that “good intentions” are good enough only in the Salvation Army. In real life, in politics, it’s the action that counts.

I think that many people pinned their hopes for a better life on Obama. This lead them to put him on a pedestal and elevate him, ion their minds, to messianic levels. They expect him to perform miracles and when he cannot do so (no human can) they are likely to turn on him.
I don’t think any blame really attaches to Barrack Obama in this. His message has consistently been inclusive and about ‘we’ and ‘us’. “We need to…”…”We can…”
It’s been a month, nearly. He has started, he has even achieved a few small steps in that month, but it will be quite a while before everything can be fixed.

Anyway, he actually have done quite some huge stuff, like cancelling all Bush’s last-minute executive orders. I don’t think that has ever happened before.

And many other stuff, including some action that will help beleaguered home owners. My friend, who own a house in USA, couldn’t be happier. I can only imagine the (sinking) feeling over the possibility of being homeless – and very happy for him too.

Yes, I was writing this piece with Indonesia in mind.
Note that I was no fan of SBY. My vote was for Amien Rais. Still don’t.

But compared to previous presidents (except Habibie), it’s hard to deny that SBY did significantly better for the people.

For example, we’ve reached independence of rice supply (swasembada), with not much fanfare. While the swasembada on Soeharto’s regime were sometimes false – boasted repeatedly, while in fact the gov’t are still importing silently.

Our economic situation is also better. An example – I never thought we’ll be able to see our country free from IMF’s regime in my lifetime. That one was very surprising and quite satisfying
.
Etc, etc. Anyway, to some, he may seem slow.
But when we look deeper, it’s truly astonishing. Turned out his political enemies are spreading “political landmines” all over the place. He had to take his steps very carefully, or he’ll explode some. In fact, he already did. More reasons to be cautious.

That’s how messy Indonesia is. Our elites truly sucks. Even Soeharto only managed to keep them under control with iron fist AND sharing the booty with them.

The system sucks too – the good ones are pretty much impossible to raise to the top. Power are reachable to those who are willing to do anything for it. So that left us with two types – the bad ones, and the good one who’ll have to do compromises along the way.

But not many people are willing to spend some time and analyze things. It’s easier to just criticize until your mouth foamed, and then still repeat our past mistakes anyway. For example, re electing the past president who had sold this country’s assets for very cheap price, while neglecting its people.

Obama couldn’t have been elected at a more difficult time. The next few years are going to be very tough – not just for America, but for the whole world.
That said, I think his bold spending plans are a step in the right direction, and he should be applauded for that.

I think that many American think that Obama will pull out a magic wand and make everything ok in a matter of months. Even in Europe people think that Obama will help the world economy and make everything perfect. A realist knows that that is too good to be true, but I am sure Obama is the best man for the job of leading the USA in these turbulent times!
