Powerbook without battery

After using it for several weeks, I noticed that my PowerBook’s battery capacity has decreased sllightly. Where it used to be able to run for about 2 hours and 15 minutes after a full charge, now it rarely able to stay on for 2 hours.
I’ve been guilty of running it for hours while plugging it to the power socket though.

Then I thought, let’s see if this thing can run without battery, just like my previous laptop (Lifebook). So I rebooted, then while it’s on the logon screen, I turned the battery lock *plop* there goes the battery, and the laptop is still running happily.

I’ll still buy a spare battery later, but now I’m no longer in any rush. Very nice.

  1. I did that too: running my iBook for hours with the electricity power plugged. Lucky me, soon after my husband noticed that (while the iBook still just a week old), he told me it would damage the battery and asked me to unplug the power if the battery is already full.
    He gave me a link to Apple forum for the explanation. Now it still runs for hours 🙂

  2. I envy your iBook – saw a friend’s, and he told me that it will run for HOURS on battery. And it’s a very old one. Wow.

    I was a speaker a seminar in Padang earlier this week, it was just a 1:45 speech & discussion, and my Powerbook’s battery died on me. Heh.

  4. In that case, Mac Sux. A well designed laptop shoud not make a negative impact to battery if it is already full and the laptop still connected to power supply. The charging system should know the difference condition where it should do full charge, trickle charge, or no charge.

  5. Actually, it’s okay to still plug your notebook to the powersupply even when it’s already full. Just make sure that you drain (or almost drain) the battery at least once a week and everything is good to go.

    Also make sure you do some battery maintenance once in two months (you can find the info on apple’s website)

  6. @Dedhi – strange thing is, I have yet to find a laptop which does not suffer from similar problem. My friends with NEC/Acer/Toshiba/Thinkpad/etc laptops all are complaining with the same problem.

  7. concur with oskar. at least once in every two weeks you must use the battery until it’s drained up, and once in every 2 months recalibrate the battery. it should prolong your battery life.

    If your in a situation where you have no power source or adapter for you laptop, its important to have a good reliable battery. You don’t want to be in the middle of typing up a big report and then have your battery die and leave you with unsaved and unfinished work.

  22. Laptop batteries, like any other batteries suffer by overcharge. If your laptop does not have an intelligent charging circuit it can damage your battery quickly if you keep it plugged to AC/DC adapter all the time. Intelligent charging circuits are able to stop battery charge when it reaches certain conditions and avoid overcharge. Now I wonder, Why in the world there are such great amounts of laptops with really poor charging circuits that are just frying our batteries? Perhaps, HP, IBM, DELL and APPLE need to sell more batteries?? Mmmmm.  No comments.

  23. When you use your laptop on the power cord, it will be better to take out the battery. However, you should not plug the cord straight into the outlet, but use a UPS instead.
    A laptop battery does not have a lifespan measured in years, but in cycles. Keeping it in the laptop while using on a power cord will complete the numbers of cycles quickly.
    Also, when taking the battery out of your laptop for storage, it is best to store it at 40% of the full-charge state, and store it in a cool place.
    Anyway, if you use your laptop only at your desk with the power cord, think about getting a desktop instead. Laptops are easily broken and not as easily repaired.

  33. Just wanna share. There is little difference in how a laptop battery works and how other device batteries work.
