Apa sama sekali belum ada yang menonton film ini ? 🙂 Anyway, berhubung saya sudah menunggu selama… 10 tahun? 12 tahun? Too long, basically 🙂 jadi begitu saya lihat poster film Doom di Plaza Senayan, saya langsung menyatakan bahwa saya akan menjadi salah satu penonton pertamanya di Jakarta. Apalagi ketika menyadari bahwa di Inggris film ini baru akan diputar pada tanggal 2 Desember; wow… my condolences, he he.

Di luar dugaan, ternyata partner saya tersenyum mendengarnya, dan mengatakan bahwa dia akan ikut menonton juga. Well, the more the merrier 🙂

Jadi, minggu lalu (24 Oktober 2005), kita mampir ke bioskop PIM2. Bioskop terisi sekitar 2/3-nya, not bad.

OpenOffice 2 !!

Finally, OpenOffice version 2 has been officially released !
Even less reason to pay Microsoft for their Office software, and Access (now that OO includes a database software)

For those in Indonesia, click here to get the best download speed possible.

Note: if you’re having problems with Office documents becoming weird when opened in OpenOffice — they’d LOVE to hear about it from you. You are welcome to send that troublesome file to them, so they can analyze it, and enable OpenOffice to open it with no problem.

Inside Indonesia’s War on Terror

I was alerted by a friend of mine about a special documentary made by SBS titled “Inside Indonesia’s War on Terror”. He said that this documentary has exposed the terror-network which involves USA government, Indonesian Police & Army, Interpol, and so on.

Unfortunately, SBS has pulled down the show’s transcript from its website. “The transcript is currently unavailable”, that’s all to it there.

Indonesia is no stranger to this kind of set ups. Many of us still remember the “Komando Jihad” (translation: Jihad Commando) – it was created by General Ali Moertopo.

100 blog Indonesia: versi Google

Priyadi membuat posting baru-baru ini mengenai 100 blog Indonesia. Daftar ranking tersebut adalah menurut Technorati.

Saya pikir, bagaimana kalau menurut Google ?

Ini yang kemudian saya lakukan:

  1. Meng-copy daftar situs 100 blog tersebut dari posting Priyadi
  2. Membuat script PHP yang :
    • Mengambil satu situs dari daftar
    • Mengakses Google
    • Memeriksa rankingnya di Google, dengan melihat total inbound links untuk situs ybs
    • Menampilkan hasilnya dalam format HTML
    • Ulang lagi, sampai seluruh 100 situs tersebut selesai diperiksa.

Windows Genuine Advantage

Chance is, you’ve encountered this when you’re trying to download certain files from Microsoft’s website. Personally, I’ve been avoiding files which requires me to go through it. However, today I was no longer able to evade it.

I was having problems with MDAC and need to find out its exact version. A tool called Component Checker will do this for me.
When I clicked on its download link, it asked me to go through “Windows Genuine Advantage” to verify that I’m using legit version of Windows, not some pirated copy. *Sigh* so I loaded up Internet Explorer (hi! long time no see) and clicked on the continue button.

It demanded that I downloaded a 400KB tool and run it. It may seem nothing to you with 1 Mbps pipe at your home, but here I am in Indonesia, where Internet access can be more expensive than gold – and it still sucks. So downloading 400KB is pretty painful, especially at PEAK hours.

After very long wait, it gave me a code to put back in the browser. So I put it in, and clicked on VALIDATE button.
After long wait – oops, it seems that Internet Explorer in my laptop is too old and can’t run the required ActiveX control. (guess why? because I’ve no longer use it ! so didn’t feel the need to update it)

So it now asked me to download yet another tool, to verify that I’m not pirating their precious copy of Windows. I’m starting to get angry (hey, I paid loads of money for this copy of Windows), but do I have a choice ?
So I clicked on the link.

After a very long wait (again!), “Genuine WIndows Hypertext Application” (whatever that means) showed up. Hurray ?
Not yet, it’s now scanning my laptop for God knows what. Here’s me (honest Microsoft customer) waiting again, while the pirates probably are laughing all over the world.

After waiting, and waiting……. finally it’s done its job. It says “Please click Continue to complete the validation process”.
So I clicked on that button.

What’s happen now? Yep, another delay, while it loads *tadaaa* Firefox.
Argh… thought Microsoft wants IE to dominate the world? Must be wrong.

But hey, Firefox loaded up the download page for Component Checker. Hurray !

So I clicked on the link, and after waiting for the 413KB download to finish, I finally got what I needed.

“Windows Genuine Advantage” eh?
Uh huh… when I bought my next laptop, I’ll make sure it came with Debian Sarge loaded. Do you hear me Dell ? HP ? Toshiba ?

Drupal 4.6.x : Mailhandler problem

Got the following error when I tried the Mailhandler module to retrieve the email:

imap_open(): Couldn’t open stream {mydomain.com:110/pop3} in /home/applications/drupal-4.6.3/modules/mailhandler.module on line 17

This will happen if your mailserver support SSL / TLS / STARTTLS. It seems that Mailhandler got confused.

In this case, you’ll need to append the /pop3 above with /notls.
So it’ll become /pop3/notls

To edit it, open drupal/modules/mailhandler.module,
go to line 15,
and modify as I mentioned above.

Afterwards it’s able to retrieve email as normal.

UPDATE:
Turned out there’s an easier way (duh), here it goes:

1. Login to your Drupal site
2. Choose administer – mailhandler
3. Click any mailbox’s EDIT link
4. Scroll down a bit, there’ll be a setting called EXTRA COMMANDS. Put /notls in there
5. Scroll to the bottom, click on SUBMIT
6. Go back to point #3, and go through all the mailboxes

IconPLN

Beberapa waktu yang lalu saya menghadiri rapat antara klien saya dan IconPLN.
Klien saya ini sedang mengalami kesulitan yang sangat serius – dia perlu meng-online kan kantor-kantor cabangnya di seluruh dunia. Namun, akses Internet yang mereka dapatkan selama ini mahal dan lambat.

Jadi masalah akses Internet di Indonesia sudah jelas menjegal kemampuan pelaku bisnis lokal untuk berkompetisi di dunia.

Karena itu saya senang mendengar kabar bahwa regulasi yang akan keluar sekitar tahun 2007 akan mengakhiri duopoli Telkom-Indosat, dan memungkinkan IconPLN untuk turut berkecimpung di jasa Internet retail (baca: home user) dan corporate.
(pada saat ini IconPLN baru bisa melayani corporate customer)

Selain itu kami juga mendapatkan penjelasan mengenai infrastruktur IconPLN. Komentar saya: Mencengangkan.
Jaringan mereka sudah mencakup Jawa-Bali — salah satu artinya adalah biaya untuk menghubungkan kantor pusat dengan kantor cabang di Jakarta akan hampir sama dengan kantor cabang yang di Bali.
Jaringannya juga sangat redundant, mungkin ini sebabnya para operator (Telkom, LintasArta, dll) telah terlebih dahulu menjadi customernya.

Berbagai layanan ada tersedia.
ClearChannel adalah layanan koneksi antara 2 titik via jaringan PLN. Biaya menjadi lebih murah karena kita hanya perlu menarik kabel ke POP (Point Of Presence) PLN yang terdekat. Dan karena menggunakan FO (Fiber Optic) dan melalui tiang-tiang listrik PLN, maka instalasi bisa lebih cepat, dan koneksinya sangat reliable.

ClearChannel ini bebas kita pakai untuk apa saja; dan kalau diinginkan maka PLN bisa menambahkan berbagai layanan ekstra — seperti VPN, VoIP, IP-MPLS, dll.

Biaya layanan akses Internetnya tidak etis mungkin kalau saya cantumkan disini, tapi klien saya akan pindah ke IconPLN dari Lintas Arta.

Kesan saya, IconPLN dijalankan dengan profesional. Staf marketingnya cukup paham soal teknis lho 🙂 ini agak jarang ditemui.
Semangat inovasinya juga terlihat cukup tinggi — mereka termasuk early adopter ethernet-over-power-line (walaupun minim publikasi). Cukup membanggakan, dulu seingat saya negara maju pun belum banyak yang bisa deploy ini.
Lalu juga seperti layanan MPLS (gimana kabarnya Telkom?), dll.

Looking forward to cheap high-speed Internet access @ my home in 2007 🙂

Google Sitemaps

Berbagai layanan Google biasanya disambut dengan gegap gempita – kecuali mungkin yang satu ini: Google Sitemaps

Mungkin bakalan banyak yang justru bertanya, “benda apa sih itu ?”

Google Sitemaps, secara singkat, memungkinkan Anda “memaksa” spider/crawler Google (aka GoogleBot) untuk meng index URL yang ada di situs Anda, dengan cara men submit sebuah file ke Google Sitemaps.
File tersebut berisi URL yang kita inginkan agar di index oleh Google.

Saya sempat melakukan hal ini dengan search engine lainnya, yaitu Muscat.
Search engine ini cukup powerful, berjalan di Sun Solaris. Namun adakalanya, Muscat mengalami masalah dengan berbagai jenis URL, dan gagal menemukan content yang seharusnya di index. Terutama dengan situs dinamis.

Dengan “memberikan” sebuah file yang sudah berisi URL yang harus di index, maka Muscat Bot (dan GoogleBot dalam kasus ini) tidak perlu lagi crawling / mencari-cari – tapi bisa langsung meng index.

Mungkinkah ini adalah solusi untuk masalah yang sedang menimpa situs linux.or.id ?
Bisa jadi, silahkan dicoba.

Bom Bali

Semoga terkutuklah pelakunya, siapa pun dia.

Di lain pihak, bom bali yang sebelumnya masih menyisakan banyak tanda tanya.
Pertama, saksi kunci yang diculik ke Australia dan kembali sudah menjadi abu. Kedua, sisa residu C4 yang terdeteksi. Ketiga, Ba’asyir tetap dihukum walau sudah terbukti tidak bersalah. Dst.

Untuk yang pertama, saya cukup kaget ketika melakukan pencarian di Google, dan rujukan ke hal ini sudah nyaris lenyap sama sekali dari Internet.
Satu-satunya yang dapat saya temukan adalah ini: [ arsip Google ]

Mono on Solaris/SPARC platform

Short answer:
Yes

Long answer:
Last time I tried – Yes, with problems.
Now – No idea, I don’t have access to Sun machines at the moment, so I couldn’t check it out.

Anyway, it seems that Mono developers does their work on Linux x86 machines, so that’s the most stable/proven platform to run Mono on.
If you want to run Mono on Solaris/Sparc, and you found problems, you can collaborate with the developers to get it up and running. Example: You can give them access to a Sun machine to enable them to debug the problem on the spot.

btw; on our case, I had to stop my work (which are documented on those two threads above) abruptly – because we found out that our supplier gave us wrong information: their eLearning software is NOT a pure .NET application, but has dependence(ies) to ActiveX controls. Which is a showstopper – there’s no way we’d be able to get ActiveX control to run on Solaris/sparc platform.

Hope it clears up things a bit.

Banyak dari kita yang sangat prihatin dengan kualitas acara di berbagai TV saat ini. Menyerempet-nyerempet pornografi, acara gosip artis yang tidak ada gunanya, sinetron yang tokohnya cuma sibuk berkelahi / berselingkuh di keluarganya, drama “religius” yang vulgar / berdarah-darah dan tidak jelas kebenarannya, dst. Mengenaskan.

Syukurlah kini sudah ada alternatifnya – TV amatir.
Ada yang harga pemancarnya Rp 20 juta, ada juga yang cuma Rp 10 ribu!

Jadi, kita bisa patungan dengan tetangga-tetangga kita yang prihatin juga dengan situasi ini. Modali 1 set pemancar dan 1 VCD player, lalu siarkan VCD-VCD yang isinya “aman” bagi keluarga kita.

Kita sebut saja produk ini dengan sebutan RT-TV : Rukun Tetangga TV 🙂

Berikut ini beberapa informasi peralatan pemancarnya.

& membuat jaringan di antara mereka ..

radio komunitas yang jumlahnya juga ribuan ..
yang memancar di band FM broadcast

Looks really legit eh ?
Except for two things – first, currently I don’t have anything selling at eBay, and second, it’s addressed to the email address which I used to register my domains. This email address got spammed a LOT.

Back to the email above – the button doesn’t exist in the email that I received, but reporting it is actually a link to a Korean website, which mimics eBay’s layout.
If you’re not careful, you can give out your eBay account to this phisher / criminals without you realizing it.

So again, be extra careful with your emails.

One day, I was looking for other juz amma, and searched for it in Google. To my surprise, my website showed up on the top.

So I did a few more searches, and here are the results:

Sudah dulu deh, capek juga.. tapi senang juga ternyata berbagai tulisan saya cukup “visible” di Internet.
Mudah-mudahan, jadinya bisa banyak bermanfaat bagi banyak orang.

Tentang BBM

Saya baru saja kembali dari perjalanan ke Sumatera Barat. Ini beberapa hal yang saya temukan disana:

1. Antrian BBM selalu panjang di SETIAP SPBU. Ini tidak terlihat di Jakarta.
2. Saya bertanya ke seorang distributor besar di Sumbar (nomor satu se Indonesia untuk produk rokok, dan banyak mendistribusikan barang2 lainnya di provinsi ini). Cukup mengejutkan, menurutnya kenaikan harga BBM tidak akan menaikkan biaya operasional mereka secara terlalu signifikan.
3. Namun di lain pihak – dia perhatikan bahwa walaupun harga BBM belum naik, namun berbagai harga produk sudah naik terlebih dahulu

Secara umum saya setuju dengan Priyadi, bahwa subsidi BBM memang tidak sehat dan rentan penyalah gunaan.
Satu contoh: Di Inggris, BBM yang di subsidi untuk pertanian ternyata cukup banyak yang kemudian disalahgunakan untuk keperluan industri. Ini padahal di negara yang sudah cukup bebas korupsi. Di Indonesia? Yang teranyar kemarin ini adalah penyelundupan BBM Rp 8 trilyun/tahun.

Beberapa ide solusi dari masalah yang mungkin timbul dari penaikan harga BBM:

  • Spekulan pasar (seperti pada poin ketiga diatas) perlu dihantam dengan sekeras-kerasnya, karena mereka yang paling banyak menyakiti rakyat kecil.
  • Perbaiki transportasi publik: Perbaiki perusahaan milik negara (PPD, PJKA, dll) dari segi pelayanan & efisiensi, tekan berbagai kartel transportasi publik yang berlindung di balik kedok yayasan (terutama agar tidak semena-mena menaikkan tarif dengan alasan BBM), hapuskan sistim setoran (karena menyengsarakan supir, memaksimumkan keuntungan majikan, menyebabkan buruknya layanan, dll)
  • Teruskan sikap tegas terhadap kreditor asing yang selama ini ternyata cuma mengacaukan perekonomian Indonesia. Kalau kita kira subsidi BBM sudah besar jumlahnya, sebetulnya dana yang dipakai untuk membayar bunga + hutang Indonesia lebih besar lagi. Jadi, kalau ini diselesaikan, maka akan ada penyelamatan dana yang jumlahnya signifikan, dan bisa dimanfaatkan untuk pembangunan.
  • Kampanyekan / Informasikan berbagai sumber energi alternatif: CPO / minyak kelapa sawit, gasohol, dll
  • Hantam spekulan pasar: yang sebetulnya tidak banyak dirugikan oleh kenaikan BBM, namun sok menderita dan kemudian menaikkan harga produk-produknya. (eh, sudah saya tulis sebelumnya ya.. 🙂 )

Saya pribadi sebetulnya akan menderita jika BBM naik, karena harga premium & pertamax tidak lagi di subsidi. Tapi kalau kita melihat kebawah, mustinya rakyat kecil justru tidak akan terpengaruh (kecuali jika spekulan pasar bertingkah).
Jadi, sekali lagi saya pribadi setuju dengan ide penghapusan subsidi BBM.
